Chapter Seventeen

Devyn

People can say what they want about me, but I never claimed I wasn’t a persistent and stubborn motherfucker.

The pain in my abdomen has dampened to a dull itch, but it still feels as if someone is tugging at the skin there. I mask my impending wince with my customary scowl and push open the heavy glass doors of the main FIB office—Fae Investigation Bureau. The humans believe it to be an elite and expensive private investigation office, but the fae know the truth.

We solve any and all crimes that have to deal with our species, regardless of the severity. A warlock uses his magic to steal a pack of gum? We handle it. A nymph is caught bribing an official to grant his children admittance to a college of their choice? We’ll be the ones to arrest him.

A psycho maniac is butchering young fae females in some sort of sacrificial ritual? That definitely falls under our jurisdiction.

We have enough fae in the police force that we’re able to steal the cases right under the oblivious humans’ noses.

As I pass into the noisy lobby of our headquarters, I get a glimpse of my reflection in the window. My normally tan skin has turned ashen, and my hair—despite recently being washed—is wildly disheveled and has an almost greasy tint to it. I suppose dying will do that to a man. I donned my favorite leather jacket before arriving here, but the cold, rough fabric doesn’t make me feel as invincible as it normally does.

I almost died, for fuck’s sake, and though I know I’m healing, that knowledge chips a little bit off my soul each time I think about it. I probably would’ve died if Gage hadn’t found a way to save me, if Xander hadn’t tethered my soul to my body. The doctors still don’t know what poison it was the bastard stabbed me with, and that terrifies me more than anything else.

Some maniac is running around my goddamn town, slaughtering innocent girls and poisoning detectives assigned to the case. It makes me…angry. Very fucking angry. And when I get angry, people die.

Painfully.

My phone chirps in my back pocket, and I grab it out with a huff of irritation.

Xander: What’s this I’m hearing about you discharging yourself from the hospital, brother? Don’t be an idiot.
